Halfway between a toy and a musical instrument, MIMTEndO allows users to explore different interactive modalities offered by sensors built into smartphones, within the limits of their computing power and overall condition.
MIMTEndO comes in the form of an articulated case containing two smartphones with different operating systems and ages (an iPhone 7 and a 2018 Huawei), which are still functional but have fallen victim to software obsolescence.
The instrument allows users to compose sequences of 16 steps with 4 sounds that can themselves be modulated with 4 different filters and effects. Each sequence and each sound can be recorded on a customizable token equipped with an NFC chip and loaded into the case like a cartridge in a console.
This prototype is a continuation of the Zombitron project, which aims to explore how a tool based on a combination of obsolete smartphones can be used to design interactive systems with a high-level approach, with the aim of promoting the reuse of smartphones among a non-expert audience.
